Oy, We Hope They Get It

These bat mitzvahed brawlers are looking for a good time

It is suddenly hip to be a Jew. From the marketing of “yarmuclaus” -- the pate covering of choice for celebrating Chrismukkah with your friends, as seen on The OC -- to hilarious T-shirts featuring the silhouette of two Hasidic Jews holding a bottle of Tanqueray above the phrase “Gin and Jews,” young Hebrew nationals are embracing their heritage, even if they are only one-quarter Jew and have never been to shul. To keep up with the culture, you can read Heeb magazine (“The New Jew Review”). Described on its Website as “a sweaty prizefight between hip-hop and sushi in this corner and klezmer and kugel in the other,” the kosher periodical features profiles on the likes of sassy comedian Sarah Silverman and articles about porn star bar mitzvahs.

Now there is an all-female Jew revue, Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad, which showcases comedy, burlesque, spoken word, and music, that’s sweeping the nation. “We’ve been together for about three years,” says Susannah Perlman, the ringleader who is known as Goddess Perlman. “We started in New York City as part of a Heebmagazine event, and the act tends to be burlesquelike.” Many of the performers, including Ophira Eisenberg, Michelle Citrin, and Dottie Lux, have been featured on HBO and Comedy Central and are well-known on the stages of New York. Perlman loves the variety-show flavor of the act: “We have a Hasidic striptease, and spoken-word artist Vanessa Hidary is the most unexpected part of the show, with a more serious tone.” So what will Miami’s Jewish population think of the performance? “They’re going to love it. They’re going to wonder what’s taken us so long.”
