Long before the mainstream got drawn into animation for adults with The Simpsons, Family Guy, and King of the Hill, Spike and Mike discovered there was an audience for what some might call “cartoons.” Craig “Spike” Decker and Mike Gribble began in the Seventies, screening animated shorts with concert and feature films and live band performances. It soon became clear that the shorts were the big draw, and by ’77 the duo was specializing in gathering, and exhibiting, adult (sometimes very adult) motion comics (fave titles include “Home Honey I’m High” and “Rick the Dick in Hospital Hell”). Gribble passed away in ’94, but Decker has kept the vision alive by soliciting tapes and DVDs and marketing them (through www.spikeandmike.com). Spike & Mike’s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation finds a perfect home during the ongoing “Art in the ’Toon Age” exhibition at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood.
