Bridging the Gap

Modern rap beefs may be played out behind the security of dis tracks and radio interviews, but true-skool enthusiasts know that hip-hop in its rawest and most directly aggressive form can be found only at an MC freestyle battle. If you've never seen one in person, they are at turns exhilarating and embarrassing. This Friday on South Beach you'll be able to catch what is turning out to be one of the biggest battles of the season. Organized by Brimstone127, local breakdancing legend Speedy Legs, and Black Sheep's Mista Lawnge, the event features local DJs The Brass King and Induce. Induce recently released his debut album, Cycles, while the Brass King has been a pillar of the local hip-hop community for the past seven years and is currently behind upstart label Above Ground Records. The festivities will also include art installations by Junior Vitale and Dam Crew's Zun. But don't get it twisted — the main attraction here will be the battle, and with more than $3000 in cash prizes, this event won't see the MCs pulling any punches.

Bridging the Gap takes place at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, at the 21st Rec Center, 2100 Washington Ave, Miami Beach. Admission is $20. For more information, visit www.brimstone127.com.
