Jason Forrest

Shamelessly Exciting (Sonig)

There are many things I didn't know about Seventies and Eighties pop before I heard the new album by sample deconstructionist/pop genius Jason Forrest. For one, I was unaware that combining trace elements of Seals & Crofts, Stealers Wheel, and Blues Image could result in a glitch-house cut ("Skyrocket Saturday") as euphoric as Basement Jaxx's "Jus 1 Kiss." I didn't know that post-Chicago horn rock could sound so jaw-dislocatingly bad-ass militant ("War Photographer"). And no way I knew Southern boogie could tear Atari Teenage Riot to shreds ("Storming Blues Rock"). Though I did have a hunch that a track called "My 36 Favorite Punk Songs" would be a hell of a monolithic genre-deconstruction gag.
