SUN 8/14Ahí está, it's Miss Hispanidad! It's time to crown the new queen of the Hispanic Heritage Festival. Since 1973 this multiday extravaganza has been celebrating and sharing Latin culture. This year it begins in late September and continues through October, with various happenings throughout Miami. There will be Discovery of America Day, Festival of the Americas, a domino tournament, the Hispanic Heritage Golf Classic, a gala ball, and many more events over which Miss Hispanidad will preside.

The wearer of the crown will be chosen for her elegance, personality, and beauty. A competition was held in July to narrow the list of finalists, and now we're on to the main event. This afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00, 32 gorgeous Latin ladies will strut the catwalk for a chance to represent the festival, as well as receive a scholarship, cash, and a trip for two to anywhere American Airlines flies. The runners-up, or princesses, will also receive prizes. The Miss Hispanidad USA Pageant 2005 takes place at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St., Miami. THUR 8/13Many people consider belly dancing a great total body workout, but it was originally a traditional way to celebrate, entertain, and socialize throughout the Middle East. For its fifth annual showcase, Miami Dade College's Homestead Campus Kasbah Dance Troupe will entertain you with a "flaming fingers" fire dance, a mother-daughter routine, and the exciting debut of a male performer. Dance instructor Karisma, who has taught belly dancing in South Florida for more than 30 years, says this year's theme, "Somewhere in the Sahara," will feature both cabaret and ethnic styles. The spectacular show begins at 7:00 tonight at ArtSouth, 240 N. Krome Ave., Miami. Tickets cost ten dollars for adults, five dollars for children under twelve.
