Stepping Out

A Horse of Course

SAT 7/23Whether you prefer the classic, performance, or pleasure type, you're guaranteed a good time with these horses. Those are just three walking styles of Paso Finos, horses famous for their drumlike gait. Their quick, high steps make them look like they're prancing on fiery coals, but it's their rhythm that's hot. More than 200 will compete at the Florida Paso Horse Show. There are categories for kids, owners, and professional riders. The trot begins this morning at 8:00 at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center (7900 Bird Rd., Miami) and runs into the evening. It continues tomorrow at 8:00. Admission is free. Call 305-554-7334 or 786-486-1823. -- Karen R. FigueiredoDid Somebody Say Football?

Oh yes, the Dolphins are working out

MON 7/25re you tired of waiting for some football? As fans patiently count down to that magical day in September, find peace in knowing you can get a little taste of the action when the Miami Dolphins kick off their training camp today. Be the first to witness the hype of a Ricky Williams return. And be sure to give a loud cheer to defensive end Jason Taylor and linebacker Junior Seau, who were recently honored by The Sporting News in its annual "Good Guys" issue, which celebrates professional athletes "who open their hearts as well as their wallets to serve the needy and unfortunate." You can catch the first practices from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Nova Southeastern University training facility (7500 SW 30th St., Davie). Admission and parking are free, and bleacher seating is available for the first 2000 fans. Visit www.miamidolphins.com for a complete practice schedule. --Lyssa Oberkreser

Girls Gone Fishin'

SAT 7/23

Sheeesh. We grant them the right to vote, and these chicks, these broads, these ladies think they can do anything, and do anything as well as us men can. Working, driving pickup trucks, running for political office -- where does it end? Not with fishing. As in bowling and billiards, plenty of women not only enjoy but also excel at angling. And they're even allowed entry to the exclusive Ocean Reef Club (35 Ocean Reef Dr., Key Largo) where distaff bait-drowning gets its due this weekend with a kickoff party tonight from 5:30 to 9:00 and a tournament tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The party includes music, food, and a silent auction. A $75 donation covers both events (girls, bring a dude if you want); there are additional fees to charter a boat or rent a room. Call 954-475-9068, or visit www.ladiesletsgofishing.com. -- Greg Baker
