Saying ta-ta to tutus

FRI 5/20Miami City Ballet's Annual Student Showcase is light-years ahead of the recitals parents have to sit through year after year. Ten of the fifteen graduating students have already signed with professional companies. The accomplished teen dancers from around the world will perform a challenging mix of classical ballet, contemporary dance, and a few jazz pieces. The real test of skill and talent are two Balanchine numbers, including one nontraditional dance, which director Linda Villella swears, "has no tutus in it." Also expect a few jazz numbers from a teacher/choreographer who worked with everyone from Chita Rivera to Prince. The performances start at 7:00 tonight and Saturday, and 2:00 Sunday at the Miami City Ballet Studios, 2200 Liberty Ave., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $10 to $25. SAT 5/21Despite the millions he made as a real estate developer, George Barley was an active environmentalist. Watching the decimation of the Everglades and Florida Bay made this seventh-generation Floridian's blood boil. Although he met an untimely demise in 1995, his legend lives on thanks to the Barley's Bay Music Festival, and the rallying cry behind his cause is more tuneful than ever. Starting at 1:00 today, his spirit will be celebrated with music and good food. Bands like Felix & Baga Tricks and the Photons, as well as Miami blues band King Bee, will kick out the jams in the name of mother nature. Browse the environmental education displays, munch, and check out the goods at the arts and crafts booths. Come on down to the Key Largo Civic Club, mile marker 100, oceanside. Admission is free.
