FRI 5/13To jazz aficionados, Roy Haynes is a national treasure. Guitarist Pat Metheny has dubbed him "the father of modern drumming." Haynes set the beat for some of the greatest performances in the history of jazz, and the list of legends he's performed alongside reads like a who's who of American music. After working with Lester Young, he became a member of the Charlie Parker quintet. He played with John Coltrane's celebrated quartet in the Sixties, and he toured the world with Sarah Vaughan and Chick Corea. Most of the artists he's accompanied, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Ray Charles, have shuffled off this mortal coil, but after more than 60 years in the game, Roy Haynes is still doing his thing. Catch this percussion veteran and his quartet in a one-night-only performance tonight at 8:00 at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St., Miami. Get down, Haitian style
SAT 5/14America has hip-hop, Jamaica has dancehall, and Trinidad has soca. Haiti also has its own unique music. It's called compas, a buoyant mashup of musical influences that makes even the most hesitant dance-phobe move to the beat. Get ready to boogie at the seventh annual Haitian Compas Festival. This event has swollen into an international jamdown, with bands that cater to the tastes of veteran compas fans, the nouvel jenerasyon, and culture lovers of all descriptions. Groove to the sounds of Zenglen, Djakout Misik, Carimi, Kreyol La, and Won G, among others, and sample some spicy Caribbean cuisine. Bring on the Dancing Flamingos
SAT 5/14High-octane Cuban coffee, poor vision, and limited Spanglish skills often combine for absurd results. For instance, a quick scan of the entertainment pages might lead some low-budget Lucy Ricardo to think this weekend's Coconut Grove Playhouse (3500 Main Hwy., Miami) presentation "Encuentro" performed by the Ballet Flamenco La Rosa is an all-you-can-eat tribute to pink-feathered bird thighs, but the tasty encuentros you'll find are really on world-famous Gypsy dancer Manolete. The original production, which is performed in collaboration with the Harmonic Motion Middle Eastern Ensemble, features sensuous flamenco and Middle Eastern dance movements tied together by a cross-cultural love affair.
