Queens of the Stone Age

Lullabies to Paralyze Interscope

On Lullabies to Paralyze, Queens of the Stone Age eschew the fuzzy guitar crush of their 2002 breakthrough album Songs for the Deaf, opting for a slick, modulated rock-and-roll carousel perfect for spinning in your sports car. This makes for some ace thrills -- including the nifty rockers "Everybody Knows That You're Insane" and "Little Sister" -- that last well beyond the first half of the hour-long disc. Before it ends, though, Lullabies to Paralyzegrinds to a halt on a smattering of tedious and rote efforts -- such as the aptly titled bore "Broken Box" -- that leave a nasty and synthetic aftertaste.
