TUE 3/1In the weeks leading up to Sunday's Academy Awards, nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock is as elusive as a Yeti. In his most recent blog posting, on February 9, he writes: "Ever since the nominations came out last week, my life has been shifted back into interview overdrive. It's crazy. I've spent the last week talking to journalists all over the world, talking about what an incredible year this has been for documentaries and how excited I am just to be a part of it." He's been too busy to return calls and e-mails to this journalist, but that's something that can be addressed during tonight's presentation at Barry University's Broad Auditorium (11300 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores). The school is bringing Spurlock to town as part of its fifth annual Wellness Day to promote health and fitness. Spurlock's 8:00 address will be flanked by two showings of Super Size Me, at 6:30 and 9:30. The event is free and open to the public. There are more complex aspects to Caribbean life and history than sunshine and palm trees, so get ready to learn a lot more about our neighboring archipelago. The Historical Museum of Southern Florida, (101 W. Flagler St., Miami) will bring the Caribbean's past to vivid life with "Visions of the Caribbean," an exhibit that puts the museum's massive collection of items on proud display for the first time. Rare images of African slavery, East Indian indentured labor, and European colonization trace the evolution of the West Indies from sugar cane empire to tropical tourism mecca. For an auditory portrait, browse the "Calypso Music in Postwar America" exhibit, which details the history of Trinidadian music with songbooks, album covers, and movies. Starting on March 3, the museum will present films, live music, and lectures to contextualize the exhibit on Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 8:30. Bridging the gap from the minute to the grand, artist Gérard Vachez tampers with traditional approaches to painting and photography to reveal microcosmic worlds that are dynamic and compelling. Vachez toils meticulously upon slide-sized acetates, creating rich layers of topography with paints, raw fibers, and a diversity of media he then scratches, burns, and alters with fire before scanning into large-scale prints that evoke dreamy landscapes teeming with interior tension and complexity.
