Irie Marley Party

Roots, rock, birthday

THU 2/3

Since he died in 1981, Robert Nesta Marley has grown into big business. His humble home at 53 Hope Road has been transformed into a museum and replicated into a club/restaurant in Universal Studios, Orlando. For a man who lived his life advocating simplicity and spirituality, his name sure appears on a lot of material things: Everything from shoes and clothes to incense and license plates have been adorned with his image. A musical based on his life is expected to hit London by year's end, and the Bob Marley Resort and Spa is scheduled to open in the Bahamas in 2006. Bob Marley would have turned 60 on February 6, and in commemoration, festivals from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Kingston, Jamaica; from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Austin, Texas, will feature reggae artists singing the praises and songs of this musical prophet. But how would Bob have wanted his birthday celebrated? Probably simply, with a little cake, some ice cream, and an inspired combination of great music and ganja for all. Tonight's Jah Surf Party will honor the king of reggae's legacy with special giveaways, and of course, music. Celebrate tonight at Flavour, 2895 McFarlane Rd., Miami. Bearly Art

Group shares fuzzy friends with kids

SAT 2/5

Teddy bears are fun, playful, and potentially pieces of art. Teddy bear artists use their talents with fabrics and accessories to build original bears. The key to distinctive personalities is in the details -- the fuzziness of the nose, the placement of the eyes, the perkiness of the ears, and expression. To enjoy the variety -- including artist bears, collectible bears, and manufactured bears -- Ye Olde Bear Den, the local chapter of Good Bears of the World, is holding its Teddy Bear Jamboree & Garden Fest today from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Palm Hammock Orchid Estate, 9995 SW 66th St., Miami. The highlight -- auctions at 1:30 p.m. featuring bears, handicrafts, and other items -- raises money for the chapter, which donates thousands of bears to local groups that work with children who appreciate a furry pal. Gospel Over Easy

Save Dade fundraising brunch

SUN 2/6

We live in a nation where a prominent preacher is given television airtime to rant and rave about how SpongeBob SquarePants instills evil thoughts into the minds of our children because his show somehow manifests homosexuality. Doing God's work? Did He ask for any help? Fighting the sick prejudice against homosexuals, particularly with regard to the county's Human Rights Ordinance, has been the calling of Save Dade since 1998. To help raise support for the foundation, Songstress C will entertain at the third This Ain't Your Mama's Brunch event today from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the District, 35 NE 40th St., Miami. Admission is $65. Call 305-751-7283. -- Greg Baker
