Rings of Desire

FRI 1/14

A gas giant with rings of ice and rock, Saturn has been the object of NASA's and the European Space Agency's Cassini-Huygens Mission. The Huygens probe has detached successfully and should reach Saturn's largest moon Titan any day now. While you're waiting for the photos from space, you can see stunning Saturn with the naked eye while it's rotating opposite the sun. You can follow its path in the northeastern sky, or visit the Weintraub Observatory from 8:00 to 10:00 tonight at the Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium, 3280 S. Miami Ave. Call 305-646-4200 or visit www.miamicsci.org. -- Lyssa Oberkreser

Island Styling

Culture and creativity by the bay

SAT 1/15

As if anyone needs an excuse to venture down to South Florida's laid-back appendages, today's Art Under the Oaks festival is sure to make the drive to the Keys worth your while. Artists from all corners come to display their wares under a canopy of trees in the warm afternoon sun. All the items at this festival must be handmade, so this means loads of unusual artisan items such as sculpture, photography, handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, and woodwork. Purchase exclusive oil, watercolor, and acrylic paintings. Groove to the sounds of the Keys Music Makers, sample delicious Keys and ethnic culinary delights, and take part in an art raffle. The activities start today at 9:00 a.m. at the San Pedro Catholic Church, mile marker 89.5, bayside on Plantation Key. Admission is free. Swampy Circumstance

Talking Glades over dinner

TUE 1/18

With wood storks, egrets, and alligators as residents, the Everglades seems a world apart from the posh playground that's South Florida's city landscape. To put attention on the Everglades and its relationship to quality living, the Urban Environment League is cohosting a dinner and discussion tonight with two speakers providing different perspectives on the Everglades Restoration Project. For adventurous folks, the group is also offering a bus trip February 5 to Everglades National Park, where participants can enjoy the natural sights and sounds via a tram tour. Each event is $25, discounted for those who sign up for both. The dinner discussion is at 6:00 p.m. at Miami River Inn, 118 SW South River Dr. Some free seating is available for the discussion portion only. Reservations are required. Call 305-325-0045. -- Patti Roth
