Adam Green

Friends of Mine Rough Trade

Adam Green was half of the Moldy Peaches, an anti-folk duo (Kimya Dawson was his female counterpart) known for its singsong melodies and scatological humor. Now, as a solo artist, Green has taken a quantum leap with Friends of Mine. Its lush melodies are instantly memorable and supported by a string section that wouldn't sound out of place on a Bacharach production. The music oozes sentimentality, while the disjointed lyrics are full of playful, if haphazard, poetry. Green's crude humor surfaces here and there (on "No Legs" he sings, "There's no wrong way to fuck a girl with no legs"), but on most of the cuts he croons with the winning charm of a forlorn Romeo.
