You can no longer talk about dog shows without someone referring to the hilarious Christopher Guest film Best in Show, a "mockumentary" about eccentric pageant parents involved in the mad world of American Kennel Club competitions. But real dog show enthusiasts are nothing like Meg and Hamilton Swan, the uptight, J.Crew-wearing, Starbucks-drinking, dysfunctional parents of depressed Weimaraner Beatrice. They are friendly folks who love their dogs. "As a childless couple, we have dedicated our lives to our work and our four-legged children," writes Lourdes Cofino, wife of Greater Miami Dog Club president Pedro Cofino. The Cofinos and their fur kids, three German shepherd dogs and a rare and strikingly handsome pharaoh hound -- one of the most ancient of ancient breeds -- named K'zar Anubis of Cofino, will be featured in a new reality show about show dogs that will air on the Bravo! cable network early next year. Get a peek at the Cofinos' dogs and hundreds of others at the Greater Miami Dog Club All Breed and Agility Dog Show, today and Sunday at the Fair Expo Center, 10901 Coral Way. Tickets cost $2 to $5. SAT 12/4Breaking free to cruise the sweet deep blue is among the top blessings of life in South Florida. Too bad so many local boaters can be complete jerks. Not you, of course. You partake in Education Navigation, a youth-oriented weekend of hands-on activities, informational displays, and presentations aimed at teaching how to make the waterways safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable while also marking the 65th anniversary of the local chapter of the United States Power Squadrons. Take a land vessel to the Coconut Grove Expo Center (2700 S. Bayshore Dr.) Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for clinics about boat building, diving, fishing, and other oceanic topics. Admission is $7 ($5 advance). Call 305-301-5355 or visit www.miamisquadron.com. -- Greg Baker Nice Racks
