The Only Children

Change of Living Glurp

The Anniversary, a well-known emo outfit from Lawrence, Kansas, has morphed into the dark, bluesy The Only Children. Lead singer Josh Berwanger has a pleasing indie-rock warble that lets him sing his tales of heartbreak, homelessness, and murder with candor, and the band plays everything from ragged Americana stomps to swinging pedal steel waltzes. "Lonesome Road," a song of lost love, moves from folky guitar-picking to folk-rock bombast, while Berwanger mulls over sin and salvation on "The Circle Will Not Be Broken," concluding with an chorus that references the Carter Family song without borrowing its melody or lyric.
