Visionary Life

Behind the scenes, ahead of his time

FRI 8/13 Fate sure smiled on Tom Dowd. As if working on the Manhattan Project (yeah, thatManhattan project) and pioneering stereo and multitrack recordings weren't enough, Dowd went on to work with big time American legends including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, John Coltrane, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He brought together Duane Allman and Eric Clapton for the legendary Derek and the Dominos recording sessions. He seemed to be a magnet for those once-in-a-lifetime recording events as well as a silent cog in the machinery that created the Atomic Age. This remarkable life is captured in Tom Dowd and the Language of Music, a seven-year labor of love by South Florida documentary filmmaker Mark Moormann. The film screens tonight at the Shores Performing Arts Theatre (9806 NE 2nd Ave., Miami Shores) at 8:00. Tickets cost $10. Call 305-751-0562. --Margaret Griffis

Maternal Side

FRI 8/134 Everyone knows the story of spoiled princess Salome and the birthday gift she asked of her King Herod: that he present her with the head of John the Baptist on a platter. But not many people (except everyone who's read the New Testament) know about Salome's mom Herodias, and her role in the court. Knowing Herodias, who married her uncle (Herod Philip) and then had an adulterous affair with yet another one of her uncles, Herod Antipas, she was busy getting around. Sounds like great fodder for a soap opera or a flamenco ballet, which is exactly what Ballet Flamenco La Rosa has created in collaboration with Harmonic Motion Middle Eastern Dance Theatre. In Herodias: A Flamenco Ballet, Siudy Garrido will portray Salome, Ilisa Rosal will perform the role of Herodias, and Curillo de Bormujos of the National Ballet of Spain will play Herod in performances at 8:30 tonight and tomorrow at the Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. Tickets cost $25. Call 305-444-9293. --Nina Korman
