With 1300 miles of hiking trails that make up the Florida National Scenic Trail, running from deep in the south of the state up through the Panhandle, and under perpetually sunny skies, there's no reason not to lace up those hiking boots and hit the woods. Need help with the basics? As in how to pack a backpack? Then join our local Big Cypress Chapter of the Florida Trails Association for National Trails Day at Bill Sadowski Park (17555 SW 79th Ave.), where the experts will give demonstrations on a host of hiking tips. Get the lowdown on water purification, how to prepare yummy trail food, and what interesting flora/fauna to look for while beating a well-worn path. The outdoorsmen and women will even take you and your newest hiking buddies on a romp while teaching you how to follow the marked blazes -- just like Daniel Boone! -- so you'll never get lost again and be forced to eat strange leaves and berries. As you confidently bound around the park, you can revel in the fact that all across the nation your hiking brethren are enjoying God's green earth along with you. Getting rad on inline skates, skateboards, and BMX bikes can transform the nerdiest adolescent into a baaaad mutha. Being agile on wheels is the social equivalent of playing guitar: You are instantly cool. Unlike some pushy parents, the folks at One Cool World, purveyors of adventure sports camps in City of Miami parks, think having fun while doing these activities is the entire point. The group is hosting an open house where families will get tips on pulling off seamless 360s as well as tossing horseshoes, playing football, and whacking croquet balls.
