Pup It Up

Drool over dogs

SAT 5/29
If you had a dog, you'd name him Nick and you'd love him, and you'd hug him, and you'd squeeze him. But draconian rules mandate you can't have a bird or a turtle, let alone a little furry 4-legged friend, where you live. This weekend, though, you can dream a little by watching dogs of all kinds during the South Dade Kennel Club's All Breed Dog Show at the Fair Expo Center (SW 112th Avenue and Coral Way). From 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today and tomorrow, more than 100 purebred pooches will sit, stay, jump through hoops, and show off their fabulous figures. Even if you can't take a hound home, you're welcome to purchase a bevy of doggie-related items. Admission is $5 for adults; kids and seniors pay $1. Call 305-437-7242. -- By Nina Korman

Steely Green
Plant fair offers no guilt

FRI 5/28
One reason cacti and succulents are so popular is that they are virtually impossible to kill. Behind thoughtless suburbanites there is a trail of dried geraniums, ferns, even ficus -- murdered by neglect. But succulents with their hearty waxy leaves are tough little critters. Spiny cacti can withstand months without watering and prick you on the foot as revenge for your carelessness. Join the acolytes from the South Florida Cactus and Succulent Society at their annual show and sale. A wide variety of tough beauties is available to gawk at and buy. The 3-day event begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs through Sunday, May 30, at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables. Admission is free with $10 garden entrance. Drifting Away

SAT 5/29
One major reason to go to the Falken Tire Ignition Showoff: Rapper Pitbull makes a cameo, surely to wax poetic on his bouncy hip-hop hit "Culo." Otherwise the event is a fierce exhibit of fast and furious street tactics. The Falken group of drivers will showcase the sport of "drifting," a daring blend of tailgating and weaving. If you can't get enough of this on I-95, show up at the Homestead Miami Speedway (1 Speedway Blvd.). The 2-day showcase begins at 11:00 a.m. today and tomorrow. Admission is $20, or $30 for both days. Call 305-230-5000. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
