Wide-eyed statues tackle the music biz

TUE 5/18

Your friends snicker at your vast and valuable collection of Precious Momentsfigurines. But now you have the last laugh. The teardrop-eyed porcelain statues bearing inspirational messages have learned to rock. That's right. PM Rocks! is a cute little girl band, a quintet in fact, bearing guitars, playing drums and keyboards, and singing. Like any self-respecting rockers, the band of collectibles is on a 35-state tour, raising money for VH1's Save the Music Foundation. First stop: Amy's Hallmark (14765 S. Dixie Hwy.), where today from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. little groupies ages 8 to 12 will have the chance to lip-synch, strum a cool heart-shaped electric guitar, play games, win prizes, and, of course, augment or initiate their own Precious Moments obsession. Admission is free. Call 305-232-5559. -- By Nina Korman

Gay Daze

Film revisits lavender history

FRI 5/14 Prior to the 1969 Stonewall uprising, gay men and lesbians lived the life in secret societies. Code was de rigueur and gathering places such as bars and tea rooms were strictly underground. Miami-based filmmaker Robert Rosenberg's 1986 feature Before Stonewall collects tales from the days when being gay was seen as a mental illness and cops enjoyed busting drag queens. Tonight Rosenberg premieres the DVD version of the movie, featuring segments of interviews that were left out of the original. Look for insightful snippets from poets Allen Ginsberg and Audre Lorde. The screening, part of Cinema Vortex's spring season, begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Shores Performing Arts Theatre, 9806 NE 2nd Ave., Miami Shores. Tickets cost $8. Goodhearted Gala

SAT 5/15 Despite the chilling apathy of a postmodern world, some young people still care. Take the Junior League Against Cancer. For 7 years they have thrown Arroz Con Mango, a bash of epic proportions, which makes you wonder how long they'll be regarded as "Junior." The event takes place at 8:00 tonight at Terminal 12 in the Port of Miami (east on 5th Street in downtown). The unstoppable Jade Alexander hosts a fashion show. Performances by Ahi Na Ma, Havana Soul, and those beloved Spam Allstars (above) follow. Tickets cost $70. Call 305-552-7247. -- By Humberto Guida
