Damp Doings

Make a splash in the sun

SAT 5/8

Finally an event that gives new meaning to the phrase "go with the flow." The WaterFest pays tribute to all the refreshing liquid that surrounds us, besieges us in the summer, and makes up most of what we are. Created 2 years ago by some of the folks behind the King Mango Strut, the family-oriented extravaganza features more nuts than fruits. In fact those who are mad about moisture will get their freak on with activities that include spins on a water slide and Hawaiian dancing. Guest speakers will offer educational chats about agua, mermaids will make appearances, and, of course, plenty of food and drink will be available. Soak up the fun from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Biscayne Nature Center, 6767 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne. Admission is free but parking will cost you 4 bucks. Call 305-361-6767. -- By Nina Korman

Power Run

THU 5/6 The organizers of the South Florida Mercedes-Benz Dealers Corporate Run 2004 strive to take competition out of boardrooms and onto the streets of downtown Miami. Open to almost anyone with a full-time corporate, governmental, or financial job (and their suffering loved ones), this 3.1-mile run/walk gives ladder climbers the opportunity to appear fit for just 1 day, and possibly drive home in a Mercedes. If you want to blister your feet, or simply sip a smoothie and watch yuppies oppressing their achy dogs, wander down to Bayfront Park (301 Biscayne Blvd.) after work today. Communal warmup is at 6:15 p.m.; race is at 6:45 p.m. (Yes, workaholics, you have to leave your job at a normal hour.) Individual entry fee is $30 and benefits the South Florida Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Call 305-666-7223 or click here. -- By Margaret GriffisEnvironment

Penance for Polluters

SAT 5/8That body of water you've been tossing things into for years from your car is about to have its revenge. From 9:00 a.m. to noon, environmental group ECOMB wants you to join its Banks of Collins Canal Cleanup. Yep, that means picking up garbage and getting squishy sneaker feet. Might as well participate since you helped pollute the darn thing to begin with. Meet at the entrance to the canal path at Dade Boulevard and Convention Center Drive. Bring hat, sneakers, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Admission is free. Call 305-534-3825 to register. -- By Nina Korman
