Do you hear the thundering horde in the distance? GWAR is coming. Are you prepared to be massacred? Well, not in the way you might think. The GWAR (short for God What an Awful Racket) collective is rock band, freaky stage show, art group, and probably a half-dozen other things they might not want you to know about. Mostly GWAR is an all-encompassing experience. Part of the fun is trying to figure out their backstory. The members claim to be million-year-old aliens once entombed in Antarctica, then released and taken to New York to play rock and roll. While that tale may not be entirely true, the chronicling of these adventures makes up the bulk of their musical output. Think of an acid-drenched version of Conan the Barbarian or the Road Warrior wielding guitars instead of battle-axes. Their live show is not to be missed even by those who find their punk-metal more painful than the rack. Decked out in horribly ugly costumes and masks, the band goes whole hog in presenting the most way-out theatrics since the big tour era of the late Seventies/Eighties -- except their extravaganza will be scaled down to a smaller stage like the one at the Culture Room (3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale), where GWAR plays at 7:30 tonight with Bad Acid Trip. Audiences have been known to leave soaked in fake blood all the way down to their BVDs. Whether playing a guitar or a charango, Peruvian rocker Pepe Alva connects with his audiences. It may be the clever lyrics and stories he weaves in song, but most likely it is the earthy, deep rhythms that inevitably get his listeners stomping and romping and singing along. Alva returned last year from a stint in Mexico City, where he went to pursue the career track of a young rockero. He found there's no place like home as far as the Latin rock scene is concerned. THU 4/15 The first one was so good they just had to create another. Innovative arts presenter Tigertail Productions is launching Tigertail, A South Florida Poetry Annual, Volume II, with a poetic smackdown that will feature readings by contributors to this latest edition. Michael Hettich, one of Miami's top poets/writers, guest edited this year's volume. He chose works from more than 20 fellow South Florida wordsmiths including John Dufresne, Peggy Hamilton, Lionel Goldbart, Angel Cuadra, and Dan Jaffe. FRI 4/16 Bunnies, Guns, and Ducks, the title of Elizabeth Hall's short film, gives a suitable taste of what kind of wacky art flicks will be showing this weekend at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, Miami Beach). Hall employs her wit and eye for whimsical, weird, and cool stuff in curating the films and performance pieces for this installment of the weekly Views from the Underground. Tonight enjoy Hall's selections of works-in-progress and completed shorts from UM art students. Saturday get a look at New York curator Lindsay Sampson's The Unprofessionals. Doors open at 8:00.
