Women on Top

Fest honors talented females

SAT 3/27

March is Women's History Month. In celebration of females and their accomplishments in the creative arts, St. John's Church in Miami Beach is hosting the second annual Women and Culture Festival, with offerings in nearly every genre. This year's all-day affair is heavy on international dance, featuring a quartet doing traditional Indian moves from the Association of Performing Arts of India, along with flamenco dance by Clarita Filgueiras and African/modern dance by Shirley Julien. Musical performers include Lebanon-born Eliza Ayoub, Alma & Niurka, and Sol. Also included: photography, fashion, a book reading, visual and performance art, fun interactive stuff like creating belly mask art for pregnant women and their swollen bellies, and a dance empowerment workshop with hip-shaking dynamo Hanan. The festivities run from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at 4760 Pine Tree Dr. Admission is $10. Call 786-218-6854. -- By John Anderson

Hard Rock Party

SAT 3/27At the yearly Rock and Mineral Show, it's okay to be stoned. Well, sort of. A dizzying array of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic specimens plus minerals mined from all over the world will be on display. Specialists from the Miami Mineralogical and Lapidary Guild (those crazy rockers) will be on hand to talk about each rock's particular role in the petrologic world. Experts will teach the intricacies of bead making, silversmithing, and stonecutting. If you're adventurous, you can try your hand at mining for rubies and sapphires. Who knows, attending may just be worth your while. The show opens at 10:00 a.m. and runs through Sunday, March 28, at the Miami Museum of Science, 3280 S. Miami Ave. Admission is $6 and $10. Call 305-646-4200. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez Culture
