Ring Toss

Brawlers throw their weight around

FRI 2/13

The upstart Major League Wrestling purports to offer a scintillating alternative to the mainstream television fare put on by World Wrestling Entertainment and other purveyors of the pseudo-sport. Judge for yourself this weekend. While the 4-match fight card boasts a World Heavyweight Championship bout, it's the special challenge contest featuring the Havana Pitbulls that promises to stir local fervor. The 377-pound package includes 5-foot-8 Ricky Reyes and 5-foot-9 Rocky Romero, who indeed hail from the Cuban capital. Their opponents must deal with the pair's signature move, a top-rope leap called the "twisting huracanrana." The rumble starts at 7:00 p.m. at War Memorial Auditorium, 800 NE 8th St., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets range from $11 to $31. Call 954-828-5380. -- By Victor Cruz

Maritime Madness

Watercraft bombard us again

THU 2/12 Surprise! Not everyone who lives in South Florida owns a boat, has a home on the water, or even cares that the sea surrounds us. Most of the folks who attend the Miami International Boat Show and the Yacht & Brokerage Show actually come from somewhere else. The boat show in its 63rd year is so huge that its 2300 exhibitors must be housed today through Tuesday, February 17, at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1900 Convention Center Dr.), Sealine Marina (1633 Bayshore Dr.), and Miamarina (301 Biscayne Blvd.), while the almost $1 billion in yachts can be seen in the water from 41st to 51st streets off Collins Avenue through Monday, February 16. Boat show admission is $15; the yacht show is free. Call 954-441-3220 for boat show info and 786-888-BOAT about the yachts. -- By Nina Korman

Grove for Sale

SAT 2/14 Few Miamians remember the days when Hare Krishnas roamed Coconut Grove; when radical gay men hung out at the Hamlet bar; when the Grove was not the oppressive mall it has morphed into. Now we can add another memory: when the Coconut Grove Arts Festival was free. You guessed it, there's a fee now. The festival with hundreds of artists from around the world starts today and runs through Monday, February 16, along McFarlane Road and South Bayshore Drive. Admission is $5. Call 305-445-0401. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
