Sail without getting financially soaked

 NOW 24/7

Being a good sailor is simple when you have major bucks to spend on a fancy boat, club membership fees, and what seems like endless maritime maintenance. Never mind actually devoting some money toward learning how to handle a vessel. Now you're broke and suddenly feeling just a wee bit seasick. Not a problem if your family qualifies for the 58-year-old Coconut Grove Sailing Club's free sailing classes. You must offer proof of low income that meets federal guidelines, but once you do, it will be smooth sailing for you and the kiddies. The club intends to reserve two spaces in every one of its Adult Learn to Sail Classes for free instruction. Children ages 9 to 14 are promised one space free of charge in the year-round Youth Sailing Program. The final session of the club's Youth Summer Sailing Camp will also be given gratis. With enough study and hours logged on the sea, before you know it your whole family will know port from starboard; have an intimate understanding of tacking, heeling, and capsizing; and be on its way to investing in blue blazers, ascots, and a minor fleet of ships. The Coconut Grove Sailing Club is located at 2990 S. Bayshore Dr. Call 305-444-4571 for details. -- By Nina Korman

Brazil bash for kids

SUN 1/18

If there's a central aspect of Brazilian culture, it's the celebration of life expressed in the country's music and dance, and in the demeanor of most of its citizens. Tucked in a distant corner of the world, the country offers lush natural resources for creative minds to marvel. Today kids get a chance to experience a taste of Brazil with samba, drumming, and food as the Miami Children's Museum continues its Ports of Call cultural series. The event is virtually guaranteed to spice up an otherwise ordinary day. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. at the Miami Children's Museum, 980 MacArthur Cswy. Admission is $8. Call 305-373-5437. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
