If you'd rather not be bombarded by electro music at a club, you can watch it on TV. Well, it's more like a little big screen at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, Miami Beach), where at 8:30 p.m. local filmmaker and music enthusiast Iris Cegarra will show her documentary Electro Dziska. A kinetic snapshot of Miami's musical life in and around the 2002 Winter Music Conference, the movie stars and features the blips and bleeps of many of the usual electro suspects: Salim Rafiq, Uprock, and Qbert. Cegarra, whose first film, Bass Frequency, focused on the late 1990s Miami Bass scene, has shown her electro work all over the world including London, Paris, and her native Venezuela. There has never been a leader like Marcus Garvey, the Jamaican-American businessman who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1914. Yet one deserving Miami activist will be honored in Garvey's name during the Suns of Afrika Week Kulcha Award Show. Twenty-six awards will pay tribute to African heroes like Uhuru and Harriet Tubman. That's almost enough to recognize all our brightest suns. But the event is not all speeches and applause; it also includes a fashion show, African drumming and dance, music, spoken-word musings, and art.
