Gearheads take on gravity

SAT 11/1

Since the early days of flying machines, Man has enjoyed marveling at the ridiculous ways experimental aircraft can crash and disintegrate. But why sit and watch archival biplane footage when one can view sillier contraptions plunge into the sea just down the street? Flügtag, which means "flying day" in German, is the Austrian sensation that lands today on Miami Beach. The contest is a modern twist on the soapbox derby ... and much funnier. Watch as handmade, human-powered aircraft of dubious aeronautic abilities are propelled ungracefully off a floating launch pad at 10th Street beach. Creativity as well as distance weigh heavily as teams vie for prizes and glory. First flight is at 1:00. Admission is free. -- By Margaret Griffis

Home opener sparks up season

FRI 10/31 With all the other sports teams around town doing so well, the Miami Heat might be feeling the heat. But this year there's a sense of optimism because Pat Riley's b-ballers have transformed from a squad of grumpy, has-been journeymen to a collection of youthful, up-and-coming stars.

The addition of free agent Lamar "Smoky" Odom and rookie Dwyane Wade (the absolute steal of the draft), along with second-year stud Caron Butler, has Heat fans thinking about the p-word (not poultry -- playoffs). But first things first. The young guns -- now playing under coach Stan Van Gundy -- need to start at the beginning, like tonight's home opener against the bad-boy Detroit Pistons. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd. Tickets range from $10 to $180. Call 786-777-1000. -- By Humberto Guida

Canine Companion

SAT 11/1 Quiet, timid, headstrong but sensitive, athletic type. Likes to run long distances and chase animals. Loves a peaceful, low-stress environment. Sound like the man for you? Well, all men are dogs, some say. But this description applies to a particular type of dog -- the greyhound. Single and looking, retired racers will be available for adoption from 1:00 to 4:00 at Flagler Greyhound Track (401 NW 38th Ct.) thanks to Friends of Greyhounds. Can't have a pet but don't mind a bet or two? Place some cash on the races and pick up a complimentary commemorative greyhound bobblehead doll. Admission is free. Call 305-649-3000. -- By Nina Korman
