It's majestic, weird, and completely erotic. Towering up to twelve feet tall and emitting an odor reminiscent of rotting flesh, the Titan arum or corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) is prized by horticulturists as the world's largest and most spectacular bloom. And to see the Sumatran native is to understand why its genus designation "amorphophallus" is overwhelmingly appropriate. Two of these sexy, rank tubers, Audrey III and Mr. Stinky, are about to open at Fairchild Tropical Garden (10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables). Although now a seemingly common attraction at the garden, Mr. Stinky became world famous in 1998 as the first U.S. bloom in 60 years. He defied expectations by blooming again in 2001 and is joined by Audrey III this time around. (Part of some sinister plant-world machinations?) The high-octane stench lasts only about eight hours after the compound flower opens, so keeping tabs with Fairchild is essential to experiencing the full effect. Expect Audrey III to open sometime between May 8-11 and Mr. Stinky around May 14-18. Just in time for Mother's Day! Admission is ten dollars. The garden is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. They are the business professionals -- the shiny, well-balanced people who manage portfolios, secure investments, administer, litigate, balance bottom lines, and wheel and deal on the economic exercise wheel. They never stop moving. Today we get to see them sweat for real. The MOS Imaging Systems Corporate Run, a five-kilometer race for the corporately employed, raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and other local charities. The run/walk starts at 6:45 p.m. at Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd. Call 305-667-9322. --By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
