Kids learn how to say no

BY JUAN CARLOS RODRIGUEZn theory, abstaining from sex is a simple proposition, but in practice the A word is a heavy challenge, especially for teenagers experiencing hormonal overload stoked by pop-culture saturation. Young bucks will be getting a hand this summer -- that is, they will be learning how to resist temptation at Summer Abstinence Camp, an eight-week day camp that helps teens maintain their virginity. Led by the fiery and dedicated educator Althea McMillan and abstinence warlord A.C. Green, the former NBA player, the program seeks to cover the real risks of sex -- from pregnancy to sexually transmitted diseases. If she can scare them straight, McMillan says, she will. She will be hosting a fundraising dinner starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Dadeland Marriott (9090 S. Dadeland Blvd.) Seating costs $35. The camp runs from June 16 to August 15. Tuition is $45 per week. Once a month the center hosts the Family Fun Fest: Arts in the Park, where kids and their parents can paint, sculpt, or even create dramatic presentations based on a different theme.
