Breathe Easy

French electronic prodigies Télépopmusik play with genre

Télépopmusik is further proof of the staying power of French dance music, which has commanded the world electronic stage since the late 1990s. The trio -- Stephan Haeri, Christophe Hétier, and Fabrice Dumont -- joins the likes of Air and Daft Punk in permeating the mainstream through movie soundtracks and TV commercials.

Formed in 1997, Télépopmusik released its debut album Genetic World last year, a versatile offering with elements of jazz, hip-hop, and rock. Its first single was the ambient lounge tune "Breathe," which featured the velvety vocals of Angel McCluskey against an acid house beat. "Breathe" subsequently thrust the group into the spotlight when Mitsubishi picked the song up for its Outlander commercial, leading to heavy rotation on dance music stations around the country.

Hétier calls their recent fourteen-city tour, which ends in Miami, a glimpse into Télépopmusik's ethos, a contagious cross section of pop-ish tunes that will undoubtedly turn first-timers unfamiliar with their sound into fans. But for those unable to make this show, not to worry: Hétier promises they will return to the States in June for another round of dates.
