Miami gets the smirk

bird gets the smile alights briefly before flying the coop again

bird gets the smile seems to be the kind of band Miami needs. Stocked with a couple of veterans from the local scene, BGTS makes sounds of the sort commonly defined in Webzines by a morass of hyphenated music-geek terms. A quick review of online descriptions suggests that BGTS is an emo-core-post-punk-math-rock-indie band. Or, as singer/guitarist Mario Quintero puts it, "We play energetic, melodic rock and roll."

BGTS has been based in Boston for the past four years, since Quintero and singer/bassist Mike Pereira left Miami after playing in various local bands in the mid-Nineties. Back in town for a couple of shows, the band has modified its usual combination of propulsive syncopation and big guitar noise used by Jawbox and Jawbreaker.

"Our drummer took off," Quintero explains, "so we're doing a couple of acoustic shows while we figure out what's going on with that. We've done it before. It limits us, but it seems to go over well."

More About

BGTS will be back at full volume this Tuesday when Ariel Vega fills in for the AWOL drummer, before going on to finish a tour promoting its self-titled EP on Miami-based Reason Y Records.

Then it's off to parts as-yet unknown. "We have an RV we can pretty much live out of," Quintero says.

Why not just stay here?

"The scene looks like it's taking off here," Quintero concedes, "but I can't be here anymore. Miami is driving me crazy."
