Who the hell is this tramp, Miss Kittin? Just a few short months ago, nobody but snobby music journalists and in-the-know hipster DJs had ever heard of this sardonic Frenchie. But now she's, like, everywhere -- featured prominently on Felix Da Housecat's 2001 album Kittenz and Thee Glitz, as well as releasing two albums with Swiss producer Goldenboy and longtime collaborator the Hacker. And she's also carrying a hell of a lot of attitude -- how else could one explain her? A woman who not only missed her flight to Miami for the Winter Music Conference but also skipped out on her San Francisco performance a few days later? Can you say "prima donna"? Here's what we know for sure: Miss Kittin likes to wear a rubber nurse uniform onstage, and sometimes performs as few as five songs a night. She also DJs on the side and performs with Chicks on Speed. She has a dry, flat vocal delivery and blasé "I couldn't give a flying fuck" attitude. That, combined with her loquaciousness and cheeky Eighties-style electro-pop, provides quite the listening experience.
First Album is essentially a compilation of Kittin/Hacker collaborations since 1997. Tracks such as "1982" and "Stripper" are here, as well as "Frank Sinatra," which contains the lovely lyrics, "To be famous is so nice/Suck my dick, kiss my ass/In limousines we have sex every night with my famous friends/Motherfuckers are so nice/Suck my dick, lick my ass." Fun for the whole family.
The Goldenboy album Or is the better of the two, even though Miss Kittin only appears on six of the ten tracks. The music really pumps, emphasizing deep, robotic funk beats and crisp production; it's less retro than First Album. Either way you lean, Miss Kittin delivers the goods. Imitators be damned. This proud bitch is for real.
