Get Up, Stand Up

Over on Virginia Key, the wailing ultimate reggae

To every fiefdom, a festival. At least that's the general rule in the Magic City, where one look at the musical lineup usually gives a pretty clear idea of who will be lining up for tickets. And then there's the annual Bob Marley Caribbean Festival, the one festival that consistently draws the most multicultural crowd in town. This year the celebration of One Love moves to historic Virginia Key Beach, the sandy stretch where African Americans once frolicked when racism kept the rest of Miami's beaches closed to them. A fitting site for the Marley family commemoration, which over the course of the past nine years has collected more than 900,000 cans of food for worthy causes. And if you were among the folks disappointed a few years back when the fabulous Lauryn Hill went home before her turn came round, here's a second chance. The molasses-voiced Hill will try again, performing an acoustic set of new material. And if the festival runs anywhere near as well as it did last year, she is sure to go on in good time, as will family members Cedella Marley Booker, Stephen "Ragga" Marley, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Julian Marley, and friends Bunny Wailer, Erykah Badu, DMX, Tony Rebel & Swade, Sean Paul, Foxy Brown, Mr. Cheeks, Johnny Dread, Honorable Apache, Kripto & Bizerk.
