Suzhou River is carefully constructed and quickly paced. It is not, however, an easy movie. Its twists and turns, herky-jerky camera work, and moody, murky style will not be to everyone's taste. But it certainly satisfies some of my taste tests. The movie has substance and takes you somewhere you haven't been before. It also has resonance. You won't forget it five minutes after you leave the theater.
