Box's show attempts to probe art as theater and theater as art

“Born Innocent” is being brought to us by Box, a self-funded nonprofit space created and supported by three local artists: Leyden Rodriguez, Manny Prieres, and José Reyes. As happens with spaces in the margin, it's often overlooked amid the architectural uniformity of Bird Road's dusty industrial section. Yet for three years and more than twenty shows, the space has provided a consistent alternative for Miami artists. “This is not just another gallery,” Prieres says with youthful conviction. “We wanted to break the stereotype of Miami as this leisure city and offer an alternative for experimentation.” On a hot and humid Miami morning, the promise that art matters as much as beaches was most refreshing.
