Blues, beats, and bloodsuckin' fun

It's hard to top the mammoth anniversary party with George Clinton, but Tobacco Road (626 S. Miami Ave.) is trying with three consecutive nights of national blues talent. Old-time master blues interpreter John Hammond, Jr., returns to the Road on Thursday for two shows, at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Hammond, the son of legendary talent scout John Hammond, Sr., has been jamming in coffeehouses and gin mills since the early Sixties. Commanding the stage with only his expressive voice, guitar, and harmonica, he's a torchbearer of classic blues. Kenny Neal, who performs on Friday at 10:00 p.m., has been plucking out New Orleans-style, swamp-bent blues since he first performed with his father's band at the tender age of thirteen. Then on Saturday night, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin, who was Muddy Waters's sideman for seven years, plugs in his band at 10:00. The John Hammond shows cost ten dollars each, and the cover charge for both Kenny Neal and Bob Margolin is six dollars. Call 305-374-1198 for more information.

Feeling so blue it's almost morbid? Try hanging out with the heretics. This Sunday you can delve into the Goth side at someplace other than the ethereal Church at Groove Jet: the Erotic Vampire Ball II at Royale (220 21st St., Miami Beach). Join the masters of darkness Nicodemus and Anitra as they host another night of whippings, leather, latex, luv, and blood. The hosts will put on performance faces and hit the stage in their Men Smash Atoms formation. The evening also will feature appearances by DPX and Dominas Machina, erotic fetish and fashion shows, an art exhibit by Galerie Macabre, and DJs Angel, Everest, and Reptile spinning everything from ambient dark wave to industrial dance. Yank the stake out of your heart by 10:00 p.m. and bring at least fifteen pints of blood to enter. Call 305-532-5450 for more information.

If you'd rather go without the cape, there's Shadow Lounge's (1532 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) second anniversary party on Thursday with resident DJ George Acosta and Amsterdam's DJ Tiesto. The evening will kick off with a champagne reception at 10:00 p.m., and will feature the release of the club's second in-house CD, a two-disc package remixed by Acosta and Dave Ralph. Cover charge is $20. Call 305-531-9411.
