Jazid and Melenhead

Three years is a pretty good run for a club in transient South Beach, especially if the club features live music. That's what Jazid (1342 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) does, and that's how long the place has been at it. And it's not showing any signs of slowing down. Every night Jazid has put a band onstage, with no cover charge. On Wednesday, November 17, the club will throw a birthday party highlighting some of the area's most robust female vocalists: Juanita "Blues Mamma" Dixon, Beverly Barkley, Ruby Baker, Nicole Jade McCloud, and Leesa Richards. The divas will be backed by an all-star house band, and the festivities start at 9:00 p.m. No cover charge of course, but RSVP is mandatory; call 305-673-9372.

You might not recognize the name Melenhead, but if you've ever seen Iko-Iko then you've experienced Ronald James Dziubla's method of adding to the band's meaty sound by blasting his heart through a sax. Dziubla is still with Iko, but he's also putting out his own groove on Melenhead. He'll be performing with his band at their CD-release party on Thursday at Tobacco Road(626 S. Miami Ave.). The self-titled release is an instrumental work that conjures thoughts about what might have happened if Dick Dale (who will be at Respectable Street Café in West Palm Beach on November 23) picked up a sax instead of a guitar. Call 305-374-1198 for more information.
