The Mission's eco-position

The Mission(637 Washington Ave., Miami Beach; 305-534-5420) turns tricks again when Chicago's Bad Boy Bill celebrates the release of the fourth CD in his Bangin' the Box series, at Friday night's Tricks II. Besides Bill's three turntables, he'll be joined by fellow spinners Stew, Smiley, and six other DJs. Doors open at 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the first 100 people and $20 for everyone else. Then the Mission gets globally conscious as it debuts its new Saturday-night party, Essence, with an Earthdance fete. In its third year, Earthdance is a worldwide eco-gala that takes place at numerous clubs in about 70 different nations on October 2. The parties are intended to raise awareness and money for Tibet through the chi of thousands of people dancing their asses off together and thinking about that harsh life up in the Himalayas. John Debo from Caffeine Records will be the main mixer in the booth; joining him are DJs Bruce Wilcox, Merlyn, Ash-Rock, and Insta. Doors open at 10:00 p.m. Admission is $15 before midnight, $20 after that.

Hard to believe, but perhaps there aren't enough tasteless tourists in Miami to keep a dive like Dick's Last Resort (Bayside Marketplace, 401 Biscayne Blvd.; 305-375-6575) afloat. The place that likes to be trashy is turning to reggae to lively up their Saturday nights. This week Dick's kicks off Planet Reggae, featuring DJs Renaissance, Waggy T, and Epps. The party starts at 11:00 p.m. Admission is free until midnight, $10 after.
