Wearing Her 'shades

At the 47th annual Green Eyeshade Awards last Saturday in Atlanta, New Times staff writer Judy Cantor won first place honors for criticism in the print division, in competition with other weeklies and monthlies.

The contest, which recognized the best work published in 1996, is open to all media in eleven southern states and is sponsored by the Atlanta chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Cantor's entry consisted of three of her art criticism columns: "Deals! Deals! Deals!" about the Art Miami fair held each year at the Miami Beach Convention Center; "A Consensus of One," about the new Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami; and "Catching the Spirits," about Haitian art.

New Times writers were among the trio of finalists selected in three categories: Along with Cantor, restaurant reviewer Jen Karetnick was a finalist in the criticism category; staff writer Robert Andrew Powell was a finalist in the investigative reporting category, for a collection of his stories about former Miami Beach city manager Cesar Odio; and fellow staffer Sean Rowe was a finalist in the feature reporting category for "Our Garbage, Ourselves," a story about Mt. Trashmore.
