No Mistake About It

Staff writer Kirk Semple's cover story "Mistaken Identity" has been chosen as a winner in the 43rd annual Unity Awards in Media contest, sponsored by Lincoln University of Missouri. This national competition recognizes media contributions that reflect issues affecting the rights and well-being of the handicapped and/or minorities.

In competition with print media nationwide, "Mistaken Identity" was honored in the Unity Awards' Reporting of Politics (single story) division for work published in 1995. The article, featured on the cover of the October 26, 1995 issue of New Times, addressed the lack of minority representation in Miami Beach city government, and specifically Cuban-American political activist Matti Bower's campaign for a seat on the Miami Beach Commission.

Other print division winners this year include writers from the Associated Press, the Kansas City Star, U.S. News & World Report, Emerge, Essence, and Time.

The awards will be presented in Jefferson City, Missouri, this Monday, April 22.
