Commend Performance

New Times staff writer Judy Cantor was one of twenty recipients of the first annual Music Journalism Awards, a nationwide competition whose winners were announced this past Thursday during ceremonies held at the Comedy Store in Hollywood, California. Cantor's "Viva Albita!" won for best feature story in a weekly or biweekly newspaper.

The piece was this paper's cover story of January 5, 1994, a profile of singer and songwriter Albita Rodriguez, a recent Cuban exile who is quickly gaining fame in Miami.

Other honorees included veteran Rolling Stone writer Michael Goldberg, who was cited as music journalist of the year; Chicago Sun-Times pop music critic Jim DeRogatis; and Scott Becker, publisher of Option magazine.
