Kudos for Glasgow

Late last month the National Association of Black Journalists Awards committee announced the winners of this year's 1994 NABJ competition for outstanding coverage of African Americans and issues of special concern to the African-American community.

New Times staff writer Kathy Glasgow won second place in the features category, for her story "Where the Girls Are" (December 22, 1993), about the homeless residents of Little River's Commerce Park. The small City of Miami park, at the corner of NE Second Avenue and 80th Terrace on the edge of Little Haiti, was tagged with the nickname "TV Park" because of the transvestites who live there.

NABJ co-chair Jeanne Fox-Alston says the organization, which was founded in 1976 and is the nation's only black journalists' association, draws hundreds of entries in its annual competition for print and broadcast journalists.

First place in the 150,000-and-under-circulation features category this year went to Bridgette A. Lacy of the Raleigh News and Observer.
